Renesas Factory Fire Impact
-Production suspension for one month, global production capacity of automotive chip may be affected

ESM China reported on March 22.
March 21, Japanese automotive chip supplier Renesas CEO made a speech on an online press conference that a fire broke out in a company's factory in Ibaraki Prefecture on March 19. It will take at least one month to resume production, which will likely have a great impact on the supply of chips in the automotive industry.

According to ESM China, the specific location of the affected factory is the 1st floor of Building N3 of the Naka Factory in Ibaraki Prefecture. Building N3 is Renesas’12-inch chip production line. About two-thirds of the production is Automotive chips. The fire damaged 11 chip manufacturing equipment and affected approximately 5% of the clean room on the first floor where is 600 square feet. Although the clean room on the second floor is intact, Renesas said that production can only be resumed after the first floor is repaired. Fortunatel, the 8-inch chip production line in Building N2 was not damaged by fire.

In mid-2019, a senior Renesas employee stated in a media interview that Renesas' total pretreatment capacity is 260,000 pieces of the 200mm production line. The Naka factory is responsible for 40% of them-nearly 40,000 pieces per month on the 200mm production line and 55,000 pieces per month on the 300mm production line. In addition, in January of this year, Renesas was also reported to have changed some of the semiconductors manufactured by TSMC to self-produced, and temporarily opened the 12-inch production line of the Naka factory, mainly involving MCU products of 40nm process technology.

Specifically, the 12-inch production line is mainly composed of single-chip processing. About 78% of chip products are for automotive use, 14% of chip products are for industrial and consumer applications, 7% are for OA/PC applications, and 1% are for mobile applications. It mainly produces MCUs with 150-40nm process technology, and vehicle-mounted mixed signal with 90nm process technology.
On the 21st, Renesas Electronics held an online press conference. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) stated that Renesas plans to restart the Naka factory in one month, which is expected to cause 17 billion JPY (156 million US dollars) in economic losses.

It is worth noting that not long ago, due to the impact of the earthquake off Fukushima Prefecture, the Resana Naka factory had been suspended once for renovation from February 13 to 21. According to foreign media reports, an executive from Renesas said that after experiencing an earthquake shutdown and supply recovery. The company currently has only about one month's inventory. In addition, according to traders, plus the inventory held by distributors, there may be two to three months of chips available for use.

Renesas ranks third in the global automotive electronics market share, occupying about 10% of the global automotive electronics market. ESM China reported that the fire at the Naka factory put greater pressure on the supply and demand of global automotive chips.
